Oceanapolis Christmas Lights (For Gerry)

Description

Oceanapolis is a large place considering the number of skyscrapers built onto each other and it is also a very small place considering it is an island the size of the tip of a pin in the middle of the ocean! The demand for living on that island is unbelievable. That is why every square inch of the island is used up. The main industries of the island are: fishing, water distilling and purification, concrete manufacturing and building, salt exports and of course pressure washing!

The buildings are constantly hammered by oceanic storms and tornados. However, the buildings are made tough to withstand the forces of the nature. Unfortunately, the utilitarian nature of the buildings, salt invasion by the storms and constant pressure washing of the buildings gives the island an apocalyptic look. Over the years, due to the demand and popularity of Oceanapolis living, this look has become a symbol of status! Every celebrity has a condo there. Movies made on the island always top the box office. Major political meetings are held on the island and so on...The island is the center of attention in many ways.

Recently there had been a movement to beautify the island. It has been said that there wasn't enough colour on the island. Too much concrete, not enough light. In recent months, a movement called Organization for Colours for the Eyes (OCE) has been able to gain a major momentum by convincing the island's board of governors to install more colorful lighting on and around the city and what occasion would have been better to implement this plan than Christmas?

Studies in ascetics were conducted and lighting material tested to determine the best way to set up the changes. As a result, a new industry was created to vanguard this major undertaking. The building neon lighting technology was born!

Today, December 16, 2014 became the day that the switch was flicked to light up the buildings and the result was glorious as predicted. Thousands of people lined up the streets to witness the lighting of the city and the event was broadcasted internationally. The export of vibrant, sturdy and colourful long beams of light to the rest of the countries in the world is expected to outpace the ocean salt exports. Why long beams of light only and not other forms? Because the islanders are used to building tall structures and the Board of Governors approved the project as long as it remained consistent with the island's overall look.

This image is dedicated to Gerry. My good friend. A true gentleman and a pal. I enjoyed (and occasionally still do by text)  Gerry's stories and his wicked sense of humor. Gerry is my appointed 'voice of conscious'. 'Good Times' as Gerry always says. :)

Merry Christmas to all. :) (Smile)

This is the process of making this for those interested: Oceanapolis Christmas Lights-Process by rabbitica

PS: Rumor has it that a company is working on designing synchronized operation modules that enable the lights to flash at controlled speeds, velocity and  brightness. Apparently further synchronicity is possible by integrating the rhythm change of the music played to express an algorithm that manually or electronically evokes the lights to follow the beat of the music.
